Oklahoma’s Governor unveiled the official United States Postage Stamp celebrating 100 years of Oklahoma Statehood on Friday, September 8, 2006. The stamp goes on sale January 11, 2007. Mike Larsen, a Perkins resident artist who recently completed a series depicting 24 paintings of the nation’s Living Elders of the Chickasaw Nation, created the painting for the stamp.
Born in 1944 of Chickasaw heritage, Larsen grew up in farming communities in Oklahoma and Texas. Beginning at Amarillo Junior College, continuing at the University of Houston and concluding at the prestigious Arts Student League in New York City, Mike studied traditional art disciplines. He is most well known for his use of exaggerated hand size in his paintings.
Larsen is also known for his murals – eight in all – that depict the arts and Native American history. He has also been commissioned by the Oklahoma Centennial Commission to create two larger than life size bronze statues symbolizing the arts in Oklahoma. Both will be placed at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall and both will be available in maquette size to individual collectors.
