If you want to know the count of men and women who died in U.S. wars from the 18th century forward, here is some information gathered from The History Channel’s online Memorial Day section with some editorial and mathematical computations added by yours truly:

  • 1812 – 1815 : War of 1812 – American Casualties: 2,260 (approx.) over 3 years, or 753 dead per war year.

  • 1861 – 1865: Civil War – 1861 – American Casualties: Union forces 646,512 and Confederate forces 133,821 (approx.) over 4 years. Total approx. casualties: 780,333, or 195,083 dead per war year.
  • April 25 – Aug. 12, 1898: Spanish-American War – American Casualties: 2,446 (approx.) within 1 year.
  • 1914 – 1918: WWI – American Casualties: 116,708 (approx.) over 4 years, or 29,177 dead per war year.
  • 1939 – 1945: WWI – American Casualties: 407,316 (approx.) over 6 years, or 67,886 dead per war year.
  • 1950 – 1953: Korean War – American Casualties: 36,512 (approx.) over 3 years, or 12,170 dead per war year.
  • Oct. 7, 2001: War on Terrorism – American Casualties in Afghanistan: 279 as of March 27, 2006, and 3,000 civilians and military members died as a result of the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on 9/11, a total of 3,279 within 1 month.
  • March 19, 2003 – Present: Iraq War – American Casualties: 2,406 as of May 3, 2006 within three years to date. Thus far, the average is 802 dead per war year.

    My estimates:

  • Grand Total American Casualties: 1,425,279 (approx.) over 231 years.
  • Total of 11 wars within that same time frame for a total of 56 years of war within 231 years.
  • The Vietnam War was the longest war at 21 years, and the War on Terrorism was the shortest “war” at less one month.
  • The largest number of casualties per war annum was produced in the War between the States.
  • The least number of casualties per war annum was produced by the Persian Gulf War.
  • Total of 175 years of peace-time within 231 years (this doesn’t account for times of stress and strife, such as the Cold War, Bay of Pigs, etc.)
  • Total number of thoughts for family members of fallen in war: Countless.

A National Moment of Remembrance is slated at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, 29 May. This moment was created with the intention that Americans would be united as they contemplate the sacrifices that men and women have made in their behalf.
